Julie Miller The Annual Scientific Meeting of the Endocrine Society of Australia and the Society for Reproductive Biology 2013

Julie Miller

Associate Professor Julie Miller is a specialist endocrine surgeon practicing in Melbourne. Her elective practice is devoted entirely to surgical disease of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands. Originally from the United States, Associate Professor Miller graduated from Washington University School of Medicine, and completed surgical training at The New York Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, before moving to Australia in 2001. Dr. Miller serves on the Executive of the Endocrine Section of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She is Head of the Thyroid and Endocrine Tumour Group of The Royal Melbourne Hospital, and directs the Thyroid Cancer Multidisciplinary Conference. Dr. Miller was an early adopter of PRA (posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy) and was the first surgeon in Victoria to perform the procedure. She has since trained other surgeons nationwide in the technique. The PRA approach to the adrenal gland is relatively painless, and benefits the patient in terms of faster recovery, less blood loss, and shorter hospital stay. The technique enables innovations such as partial adrenalectomy and day-case adrenalectomy. In addition to having three children and her clinical practice, Associate Professor Miller has authored 24 peer-reviewed articles and three book chapters, and has given 68 presentations at national and international conferences.
